Heal and Transform with EMDR Therapy for Trauma
At Somatic Spiritual Counseling, we offer EMDR therapy for trauma to help individuals overcome the lasting effects of painful experiences. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy that enables you to process traumatic memories and reduce their emotional impact. If you’re struggling with the lingering effects of trauma, whether from a specific event or ongoing distress, our EMDR therapy can help you find relief, healing, and a renewed sense of peace.
What is EMDR Therapy for Trauma?
EMDR therapy is a structured approach to addressing trauma that uses guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation to help the brain process unresolved memories and emotions. Developed to address symptoms of PTSD, EMDR has since proven effective for a wide range of issues, including anxiety, phobias, and emotional pain. By helping you reprocess painful memories, EMDR therapy for trauma allows you to release negative beliefs, relieve emotional distress, and experience greater freedom from the past.

How EMDR Therapy Can Help You
Trauma can leave deep emotional scars that impact your sense of safety, self-worth, and ability to connect with others. Through EMDR therapy, we help you work through the memories that keep you feeling stuck or overwhelmed. By engaging both the mind and body in the therapeutic process, EMDR reduces the emotional charge of traumatic memories, making it easier to move forward. With EMDR therapy for trauma, many clients experience relief from intrusive thoughts, emotional numbness, hypervigilance, and other symptoms of trauma.
A Compassionate, Holistic Approach
At Somatic Spiritual Counseling, we combine the transformative effects of EMDR with a compassionate, holistic approach. In our safe and supportive environment, we address both the emotional and physical aspects of trauma, integrating somatic awareness and mindfulness into our sessions. Our goal is to empower you to reconnect with your resilience, release stored trauma, and reclaim a sense of balance and well-being.

How EMDR Sessions Are Structured
EMDR follows a structured process, though every practitioner adapts the pacing to the individual.

We begin by getting a full picture of your history and identifying which memories or beliefs are contributing most to your current distress. From there, we build resources: internal and external supports you can draw on if a session brings up more than expected.

When you're ready, we move into the reprocessing phases themselves, where you'll briefly bring a target memory to mind while engaging in bilateral stimulation, typically guided eye movements, tapping, or alternating sounds.

Sessions end with time to settle and reorient before you leave, and we always check in at the start of the next session about anything that has surfaced in between.
What EMDR Can Feel Like
Some clients describe EMDR sessions as intense but brief: a memory that once felt overwhelming starts to feel more distant, more like something that happened rather than something that's still happening.

Others notice new insights arising spontaneously, connections between past and present they hadn't consciously made before. It's common to feel tired after a session, similar to how you might feel after a long emotional conversation. We build in time to process this together rather than sending you out the door mid-processing.
Who EMDR Can Help
EMDR was originally developed for single-incident trauma and PTSD, but it has since been used effectively for a much wider range of concerns, including complex or developmental trauma, anxiety, phobias, grief, and performance-related blocks.

It can be used on its own or alongside somatic and talk-based approaches, depending on what feels most supportive for you.
EMDR FAQ
Is EMDR safe?
Yes, when practiced by a trained clinician. EMDR is one of the most researched trauma treatments available, and major health organizations recognize it as an effective treatment for PTSD.

That said, it can bring up strong emotions, which is why we spend real time on resourcing and stabilization before diving into reprocessing work.
Do I have to talk in detail about what happened to me?
No. One of the benefits of EMDR is that you don't need to narrate the full story of a traumatic event for it to be effectively processed. We'll identify the memory together, but the deeper work happens largely nonverbally.
How many sessions does EMDR usually take?
This varies widely depending on the complexity of what you're working through. A single, recent, specific incident might resolve in a handful of sessions, while more complex or longstanding trauma may take considerably longer.

We'll build a plan together based on your goals and your history.
Can EMDR be combined with somatic therapy?
Yes, and we often recommend it.

Because EMDR and Somatic Experiencing™ both work with the nervous system's relationship to memory, many clients find that combining the two supports more thorough, lasting integration.
TESTIMONIALS
Dan possesses a unique gift for holding space for difficult emotions and offering tools and processes to explore deeper levels of what is emerging. It was an honour to work with him and I highly recommend him to anyone who wants to dive deeper than traditional therapy while held in wise compassionate witness.
JP B.
I feel very fortunate to have worked with Dan. He is compassionate, insightful, and most of all works in an intersectional framework, which put me at ease when building a trusting relationship with him. I feel that in the time I worked with Dan I made a lot more progress than I had with prior therapists.
